# Föret API

> Swedish snow depth, avalanche forecasts, cross-country track reports and ski resort reports, read-only and free to use, from https://foret.se.

- MCP server (Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants): https://mcp.foret.se/mcp
- REST API: https://api.foret.se/v1/ – OpenAPI 3.1 at https://api.foret.se/openapi.json
- No key or sign-in. Please cache responses and credit the sources.

## Data rules

- Missing stays missing: no snow value is unknown, not 0; no track report is unknown, not closed; "not assessed" avalanche danger is not low danger.
- Days are Swedish calendar days (Europe/Stockholm). A day without data is unavailable; no other day is substituted.
- Every result names its source, observation/report time and a foret.se link.

## Operations

### search_places — `GET /v1/places`

Find Swedish ski resorts, cross-country track facilities and towns known to Föret by name or near a position. Returns slugs to pass as `place` to the other tools. Matching ignores case and Swedish letters ("Are" finds Åre).

- `query` (string): Place name, e.g. "Åre", "Sälen", "Kebnekaise", "Orsa Grönklitt".
- `lat` (number): Latitude (WGS84). Use with lon instead of place.
- `lon` (number): Longitude (WGS84). Use with lat instead of place.
- `limit` (integer): Maximum number of items (default depends on the tool, max 50).

### get_conditions — `GET /v1/conditions`

One overview for a place on a day: nearest SMHI snow-depth stations (within 50 km), the official avalanche forecast if the place is inside a forecast area, and, for today, nearby cross-country track reports and resort reports. Start here for questions like "how is skiing near Åre?".

- `place` (string, required): Föret place slug from search_places (e.g. "are"), or a place name such as "Åre" or "Idre Fjäll".
- `date` (string): Swedish calendar day YYYY-MM-DD (Europe/Stockholm). Defaults to today. Future days are not available.

### get_snow_depth — `GET /v1/snow`

Measured snow depth (whole cm, 06 UTC daily value) at SMHI stations near a place or position, or for one station, on any day from 1946-08-13. Missing values stay missing (never 0); trace and patchy snow are reported as such. Station values describe the measuring site, not a whole area.

- `place` (string): Föret place slug from search_places (e.g. "are"), or a place name such as "Åre" or "Idre Fjäll".
- `lat` (number): Latitude (WGS84). Use with lon instead of place.
- `lon` (number): Longitude (WGS84). Use with lat instead of place.
- `station` (string): SMHI station id, e.g. "smhi:166810".
- `date` (string): Swedish calendar day YYYY-MM-DD (Europe/Stockholm). Defaults to today. Future days are not available.
- `radius_km` (number): Search radius in straight-line km (max 200). Default 50.
- `limit` (integer): Maximum number of items (default depends on the tool, max 50).

### get_snow_season — `GET /v1/snow/season`

Daily snow depth for one SMHI station over the winter season (from 1 August) containing `date`, up to that date, with the season peak. Seasons back to 1946 are available.

- `station` (string, required): SMHI station id from get_snow_depth, e.g. "smhi:166810".
- `date` (string): Swedish calendar day YYYY-MM-DD (Europe/Stockholm). Defaults to today. Future days are not available.

### get_avalanche_forecast — `GET /v1/avalanche`

Naturvårdsverket's avalanche forecasts (lavinprognoser.se) for the six Swedish forecast areas, from 2016-12-16: danger level 1–5, avalanche problems, assessment and travel advice. Filter by place, position (area containing it) or area name. A current forecast is returned only while valid and verified at the source within the last hour; "not assessed" is never low danger.

- `area` (string): Forecast area name, e.g. "Abisko", "Kebnekaise", "Västra Härjedalen".
- `date` (string): Swedish calendar day YYYY-MM-DD (Europe/Stockholm). Defaults to today. Future days are not available.

### get_track_reports — `GET /v1/tracks`

Latest grooming and condition reports for cross-country ski tracks near a place or position, or matching a name, from Skidspår.se and municipal data. Current reports only (no history). Each report keeps its own report time; no report means unknown, not closed.

- `query` (string): Track or facility name.
- `radius_km` (number): Search radius in straight-line km (max 200). Default: the place's radius, or 25.
- `reported_only` (boolean): Only tracks that have a report.
- `limit` (integer): Maximum number of items (default depends on the tool, max 50).

### get_resort_reports — `GET /v1/resorts`

Current Snörapporten / SLAO reports for Swedish ski resorts: snow depth on pistes and off-piste, new snow, open lifts and slopes, with the resort's own report date. Search by name, place or position.

- `query` (string): Resort name, e.g. "Kittelfjäll".
- `radius_km` (number): Search radius in straight-line km (max 200). Default 50.
- `limit` (integer): Maximum number of items (default depends on the tool, max 50).

### get_data_status — `GET /v1/status`

When Föret last published, the newest day per category, archive ranges and per-source verification times. Use it to judge how current an answer is.
